uniXEDIT is a UNIX text editor, patterned after IBM's VM/CMS System Product Editor, XEDIT, the primary tool used by VM programmers and system administrators. Like XEDIT, uni-XEDIT is fully programmable using uni-REXX, and may be used to create custom applications and front-end panels for other systems.

By using uni-XEDIT with UNIX, VM/CMS Information Services personnel making the transition to UNIX systems can avoid the huge learning curve associated with the UNIX vi or emacs editors, becoming immediately productive in the new environment.

Where XEDIT has been used within other applications, uni-XEDIT can be a critical component in porting those applications to UNIX, and can provide end users with a familiar interface on the new platform.

uni-XEDIT

uni-XEDIT is offered in two versions - Basic and Extended. uni-XEDIT basic is the text editor alone. uni-XEDIT Extended includes an embedded version of our uni-REXX language processor, so that the Rexx language can be used for XEDIT applications such as editor macros or custom applications panels. uni-XEDIT Extended also includes uni-FLIST, a fullscreen file and directory management utility similar to the VM/CMS flist.

Special features have been included to adapt uni-XEDIT to UNIX. They include:

  • Full X-based GUI support, including: scroll bars, command menus, file list dialogs for open, save, etc., mouse cursor control, cut / copy / paste, and dynamic window resizing.
  • Will also operate in character mode when X is not present.
  • Includes a keyboard mapping utility to support a wide variety of character-based terminals.
  • uni-XEDIT extended includes many sample editor macros, such as a spelling checker.

uni-XEDIT is available for most commercial UNIX systems, and comes with 90 days free support. Support is available on an annual contract basis thereafter, which entitles you to telephone and email assistance in installing and using the product, problem resolution services, and product upgrades.
